Detailed explanation of gloss of porcelain enamel

The gloss of porcelain enamel is the ability of the porcelain surface to reflect light. The purpose of this article is to explain some of the factors that affect the glossiness of enamel for the majority of enamel factories.

The gloss of enamel mainly depends on the surface condition of the enamel material. The surface state has a great relationship with the chemical composition, surface tension, viscosity and firing process of the enamel glaze.

K2O, Li2O, SrO, TiO2, B2O3, BaO, etc. can improve the gloss of enamel. Introducing a large amount of Sb2O3, Na2O, CaO, Al2O3, etc. will reduce the gloss.

Regarding the factors that affect gloss, it can be concluded that everything that is beneficial to reduce surface tension and viscosity is beneficial to gloss; while surface tension is large, fluidity is poor, and the porcelain surface is an uneven surface, and the gloss is poor.

TiO2 is beneficial to improve gloss, but it should be within a certain range, and the gloss will not increase if it exceeds the range. At the same time, the anatase crystal form improves gloss more than rutile.

The effect of the glaze melting process on the gloss is: the gloss is poor if the melting is not complete.

The type, size, quantity and irregularity of crystals precipitated by the opacifying agent during firing also have a great influence on gloss. The crystal size is too large, or too coarse, will reduce the gloss; where the precipitated crystals are fine and evenly distributed, which is beneficial to the improvement of the gloss.
